BENEVENTO
Famous for the battle that sanctioned the Roman victory over the Samnites and changed its name forever from Maleventum to Beneventum, the triumph of Rome is still clearly visible in some monuments scattered around the city, such as the Arch of Trajan and the Roman Theater. UNESCO also awarded Benevento for a “pearl” of the historic center – the Church of Santa Sofia. Finally, the Rocca dei Rettore, long elected as the residence of the popes, is definitely worth a visit.
Since June 2011, the church of Santa Sofia, built in 760 by the Lombard duke Arechi II, has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site within the Lombard periodicals site in Italy: the places of power. The symbol of the city is the Arch of Trajan which is one of the best preserved Roman triumphal arches with reliefs. It is the seat of the archdiocese of Benevento.
And for an alternative family outing, the park of the Villa Comunale is just the thing for you …
